Looking for free Chinese character worksheets to help your child practice writing? You've come to the right place. We've created a growing collection of printable worksheets designed specifically for young learners — from preschoolers just starting out to elementary students building fluency.

All of our worksheets are free to download and print for personal and classroom use. Each worksheet features clear stroke order guides, proper grid lines (田字格), and engaging activities to keep kids motivated.

Types of Worksheets We Offer

1. Character Tracing Worksheets

Our tracing worksheets feature large, clear characters with dotted outlines that children can trace with a pencil or marker. Each character is shown with numbered stroke order arrows so kids learn the correct sequence from the start. These are perfect for beginners ages 4–6.

Key features:

  • Large character models with stroke numbers
  • Multiple tracing opportunities per character (8–12 repetitions)
  • Space for free-writing practice
  • Related picture to color (keeps younger kids engaged)

2. Stroke Order Practice Sheets

These worksheets focus specifically on correct stroke order. Each character is broken down stroke by stroke, with arrows showing direction and numbered sequence. Children practice each stroke individually before writing the complete character.

Our stroke order guide explains the rules behind the sequences shown in these worksheets.

3. Blank Writing Grid (田字格) Paper

Sometimes you just need blank grid paper for free practice. Download our printable 田字格 (tiánzìgé) paper in various sizes:

  • Large grid (2 per row) — ideal for ages 4–6
  • Medium grid (4 per row) — for ages 6–8
  • Small grid (6 per row) — for ages 8+ and more advanced writers

4. Character Coloring Pages

For the youngest learners, we offer character coloring pages where each character is drawn large with an accompanying illustration. Kids color the picture while absorbing the character's shape and meaning. These are great for introducing characters without the pressure of writing.

5. Character Matching Games

Printable memory card games where children match Chinese characters with their English meanings, pinyin, or pictures. These are excellent for reinforcing recognition and make learning feel like play.

How to Use These Worksheets Effectively

Worksheets are a tool, not the entire solution. Here are tips for getting the most out of practice time:

  1. Short sessions win. 10–15 minutes of focused practice is better than an hour of reluctant tracing. Stop before your child gets frustrated.
  2. Say it while writing. Have your child say the character's pronunciation (pinyin) and meaning out loud as they write each stroke. This reinforces the connection between sound, meaning, and shape.
  3. Don't erase mistakes. If a stroke is wrong, have them write it correctly in the next box rather than erasing. Progress matters more than perfection.
  4. Review before new learning. Start each session by tracing 3–5 characters from previous sessions before introducing new ones.
  5. Celebrate progress. Use stickers, stamps, or a progress chart to track characters mastered. Positive reinforcement keeps kids motivated.

Printing Tips

  • Print on standard A4 or Letter paper
  • For tracing worksheets, consider laminating them and using dry-erase markers for reusable practice
  • Use a slightly thicker paper (24 lb or higher) to prevent ink bleed-through
  • For younger children, print at 110–120% scale for larger characters
